New Delhi, October 26: The Union Government today announced a monumental ₹50,000 crore National Electric Vehicle Charging Grid and Manufacturing Incentive Scheme, a policy poised to fundamentally transform India's automotive landscape and propel the nation towards sustainable mobility. Unveiling the ambitious plan, Union Minister for Heavy Industries, Dr. Anand Sharma, stated that the initiative aims to establish a robust network of 100,000 charging stations across highways and urban centres by 2028, alongside significant incentives for local EV and battery production. This comprehensive strategy is expected to dramatically lower EV ownership costs, mitigate range anxiety, and establish India as a global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries will be the nodal agency, collaborating with the Ministry of Power, NITI Aayog, and state governments. Funding will be a mix of central grants, public-private partnerships, and viability gap funding for private operators setting up charging infrastructure in remote areas.

The manufacturing incentive component significantly expands the existing Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery manufacturing and extends it to cover a broader range of EV components, including motors, controllers, and specialised materials. Companies investing a minimum of ₹100 crores in domestic manufacturing facilities for EVs or components will be eligible for incentives up to 20% of their incremental sales over five years, subject to meeting localisation targets.

"This is not just about electric vehicles; it's about energy security, cleaner air, and future-proofing our economy," said Dr. Sharma at a press conference in Vigyan Bhawan. "We are laying the foundation for an ecosystem that will not only meet India's growing mobility needs but also position us as a leader in green technology."

"This is a watershed moment for India. We are committed to making green mobility accessible and affordable for every Indian. The GMAD Programme will de-risk investments for private players, accelerate technology adoption, and ensure a seamless charging experience from Kashmir to Kanyakumari," stated Union Minister Dr. Anand Sharma.

Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO, ElectroDrive India, a leading EV manufacturer, welcomed the announcement. "The range anxiety and charging infrastructure bottleneck have been the biggest hurdles for EV adoption. This colossal investment directly addresses that. Coupled with the expanded PLI scheme, it provides a clear roadmap and strong impetus for domestic manufacturing. We expect significant investments from both Indian and international players now."

Dr. Priya Singh, Senior Economist at Apex Research Group, highlighted the economic implications. "This ₹50,000 crore outlay is a strategic investment with high multiplier effects. Beyond the direct jobs in manufacturing and infrastructure, it will spur innovation, attract foreign direct investment, and reduce our crude oil import bill, thereby strengthening our current account. The emphasis on local manufacturing is crucial for value creation within the country."

India's push for electric mobility began several years ago with schemes like FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles), which offered subsidies for EV purchases.
