New Delhi, January 4, 2024 – India today made a decisive leap towards a sustainable energy future, with the Union Cabinet approving the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a monumental initiative backed by an outlay of ₹19,744 crore. This ambitious plan seeks to position India as a global leader in the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen, fundamentally reshaping its energy landscape and industrial growth while cementing its commitment to climate action.

The mission, spearheaded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, is designed to catalyse the large-scale production of green hydrogen, generated through electrolysis using renewable energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission is not just an environmental initiative; it is a strategic economic imperative," Mr. Singh stated. "By becoming a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen, India will enhance its energy security, create a plethora of new industries, and generate hundreds of thousands of jobs. We are positioning India at the forefront of the global energy transition, moving from a net importer of fossil fuels to a key exporter of clean energy solutions."

Dr. Anjali Sharma, Senior Energy Policy Analyst at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), lauded the government's decisive move but also highlighted the associated challenges. "The ambition is commendable, and the financial commitment is substantial," Dr. Sharma observed. "However, success hinges on meticulous execution, particularly in ensuring a consistent supply of cost-effective renewable energy, managing water resources, and developing a robust pipeline infrastructure. Mr. Sanjeev Gupta, President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), expressed optimism regarding the mission's impact on industrial growth. "The incentives for electrolyser manufacturing are particularly welcome, as they will foster domestic capabilities and reduce reliance on imports.
