New Delhi, 28th October: In a landmark move poised to redefine India's energy landscape and global environmental commitments, the Union Cabinet today approved the "Harit Urja Aatmanirbharta Mission" (National Green Hydrogen Mission), backed by an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore.

The ambitious initiative aims to position India as a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen, targeting an annual production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) by 2030, coupled with significant decarbonisation across key sectors.

The remaining funds will support pilot projects in nascent applications of green hydrogen, dedicated research and development (R&D) efforts, and other mission components like skill development, public awareness campaigns, and a robust project management cell.

It seeks to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for green hydrogen, including robust supply chains, efficient storage solutions, and widespread applications across various hard-to-abate sectors such as refining, fertilisers, steel, and heavy-duty transport.

Special focus will be given to developing 'green hydrogen hubs' in regions with high renewable energy potential and existing industrial clusters, fostering economies of scale and synergistic development.

The policy documents highlight the creation of a 'National Green Hydrogen Portal' for transparent data dissemination, project monitoring, and facilitating stakeholder collaboration.

Furthermore, a dedicated 'Green Hydrogen Ecosystem Development Fund' will be established to de-risk early-stage projects, promote innovation, and support start-ups in the sector.

The mission also includes provisions for international collaborations, aiming to share India's expertise and leverage global best practices in green hydrogen technology, positioning India as a reliable partner in the global clean energy transition.

Singh, Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, addressing a press conference in Vigyan Bhawan. "By incentivising both manufacturing of electrolysers and the production of green hydrogen, we are building a robust ecosystem from the ground up, ensuring that 'Make in India' becomes synonymous with 'Green Hydrogen from India'.

This will create immense value, both environmentally and economically, for generations to come."

Ltd., a leading player in the renewable energy sector, lauded the initiative, remarking, "The clarity and scale of this policy provide the certainty the industry needed to make long-term investment decisions.

This is a game-changer for India's energy transition, potentially unlocking billions in private capital and innovation."

However, Dr.

Anand Patel, Senior Researcher at the Centre for Environmental Studies, offered a note of caution. "While the intent is commendable and essential for our climate goals, the devil lies in the details of implementation.

Ensuring sustainable water usage, ethical sourcing of critical minerals for electrolysers, and robust environmental impact assessments for new renewable energy projects must be paramount.

We need a 'green' mission that is truly green in all its dimensions, not just carbon output.

The scale of land and water required necessitates careful planning and community engagement."
