A critical component of the NGMI is the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure.
The policy mandates the installation of public charging stations every 25 km on national highways and within a 3x3 km grid in urban areas.
This will be facilitated through public-private partnership models, with significant government support for land acquisition, power supply subsidies, and standardization protocols.
The government aims to establish over 100,000 public charging points and 1,000 battery swapping stations across the country by 2027.

We anticipate a surge in investments and a much faster pace of adoption."

Priya Sharma, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Futures, noted, "By targeting specific EV penetration rates and investing heavily in infrastructure, the NGMI addresses key barriers to electric mobility.
If successfully implemented, it has the potential to drastically cut India's urban air pollution and reduce our vulnerability to volatile global oil prices, moving us closer to our COP26 commitments."
Currently, electric vehicles constitute less than 5% of India's total vehicle sales, with two-wheelers dominating this segment.
The government estimates that successful implementation of NGMI could lead to a reduction of approximately 1.5 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030 and slash crude oil imports by nearly ₹5 lakh crore annually.
