It also plans for pilot projects in emerging end-use sectors and production pathways, support for research and development (R&D), and a robust framework for skill development and public-private partnerships.

"This mission is a pivotal step towards India's energy independence and a greener future," stated Shri R.K. Singh, Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, addressing a press conference post-cabinet meeting. "By fostering domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and promoting pilot projects, we are not just producing green hydrogen; we are building an entirely new indigenous industry, creating millions of jobs, and positioning India as a global leader in this crucial sector. Industry leaders have largely lauded the move. Ms. Anjali Sharma, CEO of Nexus Renewables, highlighted the long-term vision. "The financial incentives under the SIGHT programme are critical. They provide the necessary impetus for companies to invest in R&D and scale up manufacturing capabilities for electrolysers, which are the heart of green hydrogen production. This clarity in policy gives investors the confidence to commit capital for large-scale projects, positioning India as an attractive destination for green hydrogen investments globally," she remarked. "The target of 5 MMT production by 2030 is ambitious but achievable with sustained policy support and industry collaboration."

Dr. Vikram Kapoor, Director of the Centre for Energy Policy Studies, further elaborated on the strategic significance. "Beyond the immediate economic benefits, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is a geostrategic imperative. It diversifies our energy basket, reduces our reliance on volatile global fossil fuel markets, and positions India as an exporter of clean energy, potentially creating new diplomatic and trade pathways. However, challenges like water availability for electrolysis and ensuring a truly 'green' electricity input must be meticulously managed for the mission's long-term success," he cautioned, urging a holistic approach.

According to official projections released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Mission is expected to contribute to a cumulative reduction of nearly 50 MMT of CO2 emissions annually by 2030. Furthermore, it aims to reduce over ₹1 lakh crore in cumulative fossil fuel imports by the same year, significantly bolstering India's economic resilience against global energy price fluctuations. The proposed investment of ₹8 lakh crore represents a monumental push from both public and private sectors, setting the stage for transformative industrial growth.
