India Launches Landmark Skill-Up Mission: ₹1.5 Lakh Crore Infusion to Boost Jobs, Manufacturing

New Delhi – In a decisive move to reinvigorate the nation's workforce and propel economic growth, the Union Government today unveiled the ambitious National Skill Development and Employment Generation Programme (NSDEGP), a multi-pronged initiative backed by an initial outlay of ₹1.5 lakh crore over the next five years. The programme, targeting the skilling and upskilling of 50 million Indian youth, aims to directly address the pressing challenges of unemployment and underemployment while bolstering critical sectors for the 'Make-in-India' drive.

Unveiling the comprehensive roadmap at a press conference, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised the strategic importance of human capital development in India's trajectory towards becoming a global manufacturing and service hub. "This isn't merely an investment in skills; it's an investment in India's future productivity, self-reliance, and global competitiveness," she stated. "The NSDEGP will be a cornerstone of our economic revitalisation, ensuring our youth are not just job-seekers, but job-creators and innovators."
