New Delhi, Delhi – In a landmark push towards energy self-reliance and global climate leadership, the Indian government today unveiled the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a monumental initiative backed by an outlay of ₹19,744 crore.

The ambitious mission seeks to establish India as a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen, fundamentally transforming the nation's energy landscape, spurring massive industrial growth, and creating a robust ecosystem for sustainable development.

Singh, highlighted the mission's dual objective: "This mission is not merely about energy; it is about securing India's future.

By becoming a global hub for green hydrogen, we will not only achieve energy independence but also drive economic growth, create millions of jobs, and significantly contribute to our net-zero targets." The Minister emphasised that the mission is a decisive step towards an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) in the energy sector, leveraging India's vast renewable energy potential.

These incentives are designed to reduce the cost of green hydrogen production in the initial phase, making it competitive with traditional fossil fuel-based hydrogen and accelerating its adoption.

Furthermore, the mission will support pilot projects in emerging end-use sectors and production pathways, fostering innovation and technological advancement.

Initiatives such as the development of green hydrogen hubs, a robust research and development framework, and an extensive skilling and capacity building programme are also integral to the mission's success.

The government expects that these concerted efforts will gradually bring down the cost of green hydrogen, making it economically viable for wider application in industries such as refining, fertilisers, steel, and even long-haul mobility and shipping.

Somanathan, Union Finance Secretary, provided insights into the financial prudence behind the mission. "The prudent financial allocation of nearly ₹20,000 crore is designed to catalyse manifold private investment, ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability and economic multipliers across sectors.

This is not merely expenditure but a strategic investment that will yield significant returns in terms of energy security, environmental health, and industrial competitiveness," Dr.

Somanathan stated, underscoring the government's commitment to a fiscally responsible yet ambitious energy transition.

Industry leaders have largely welcomed the announcement, seeing it as a transformative step for India's industrial future.

Sumant Sinha, Chairman and CEO of ReNew Power, a leading renewable energy company, remarked, "The National Green Hydrogen Mission will unlock India's vast renewable energy potential, fostering innovation and creating a competitive edge in the global green energy market.

This is a game-changer for India's industrial future, allowing us to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors and position ourselves as a key player in the clean energy supply chain." His sentiments echoed across the renewable energy sector, where players are eager to invest in the nascent green hydrogen ecosystem.

Environmental policy experts, while lauding the ambition, also cautioned on the implementation details. "India's scale and ambition can truly drive down the global cost of green hydrogen, making it a crucial pillar for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors," commented Dr.

Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

He added, "However, diligent oversight on water usage – especially in water-stressed regions where some renewable energy projects might be located – and the overall ecological footprint of associated infrastructure will be critical to ensure its 'green' credentials are truly met." This highlights the need for a holistic approach that balances energy security with ecological preservation.

India's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, announced at COP26, has been a significant driver for its aggressive renewable energy strategy.
