New Delhi, Delhi – In a pivotal move set to redefine India's energy landscape and global climate commitments, the Union Cabinet today approved the National Green Energy Corridor Project (NGEP) Phase-III, an unprecedented investment of Rs 5 lakh crore.

The project aims to establish a robust and integrated transmission network for the evacuation of 200 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy, propelling the nation towards its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030.

This landmark decision underscores India's unwavering resolve to lead in sustainable development, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources.

The NGEP Phase-III is designed to link renewable-rich states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka to national demand centres, ensuring reliable and stable supply across the country.

The infrastructure will comprise a mix of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) lines, along with advanced substations and grid balancing solutions, including battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Funding for the NGEP Phase-III will be structured through a blend of central financial assistance, state contributions, and significant private sector investment.

The Central Government will provide a subsidy of up to 33% of the project cost, with the remaining to be mobilised through state grid utilities and private developers, incentivised by competitive bidding mechanisms and regulatory frameworks designed to ensure attractive returns.

Officials noted that the project will also leverage Green Bonds and international climate finance, reflecting its global environmental significance.

“This is not just an infrastructure project; it is a declaration of India’s leadership in sustainable energy and a blueprint for our economic future,” stated Union Minister for Power, Shri R.K.

Singh, during a press briefing in New Delhi. “The NGEP Phase-III will unlock the true potential of our renewable resources, ensuring round-the-clock green energy supply, reducing our carbon footprint dramatically, and fostering a vibrant green economy.

We are building a future where energy is clean, affordable, and accessible to every Indian.”

Attributing to the project's technical complexity and national scale, Shri S.K.

Sharma, Chairman & Managing Director of POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited, remarked, “Designing and executing a transmission network of this magnitude, connecting vast renewable energy parks to distant consumption centres, requires cutting-edge technology and unparalleled engineering prowess.

POWERGRID is committed to deploying smart grid solutions, advanced forecasting, and real-time monitoring systems to ensure the highest levels of grid reliability and efficiency.

Industry leaders have largely welcomed the announcement.

Mr.

Uday Khanna, President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), commented, “The NGEP Phase-III is a game-changer for India’s manufacturing sector, particularly for equipment related to solar, wind, and transmission.

It signals a strong and predictable demand pipeline, encouraging significant domestic and foreign investment.

Dr.

Priya Prakash, a distinguished energy policy expert at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, highlighted the long-term economic and environmental dividends. “Beyond the immediate job creation and industrial stimulus, this project positions India firmly on a sustainable growth trajectory.

It will significantly reduce the economic burden of fossil fuel imports, insulate consumers from volatile international energy prices, and contribute substantially to meeting our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

This strategic investment is a vital step towards a truly decarbonised energy system.”

Official data presented indicates that India's current renewable energy capacity stands at approximately 180 GW (including large hydro).

The NGEP Phase-III is projected to help bridge the gap to the 500 GW target, representing a substantial portion of the required infrastructure.

The project is expected to abate over 300 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually once fully operational, equivalent to taking tens of millions of cars off the road.

The detailed breakdown of the Rs 5 lakh crore investment reveals Rs 3.5 lakh crore allocated for transmission lines and associated substations, Rs 1 lakh crore for grid-balancing solutions including advanced battery storage, and Rs 50,000 crore for smart grid technologies and research & development.
