India Unveils Mega Bharatmala Industrial Corridors Initiative, Targeting ₹10 Lakh Crore Investment

New Delhi, Delhi – In a landmark push to bolster India’s manufacturing capabilities and integrate the nation more deeply into global supply chains, the Union Cabinet today approved the 'Bharatmala Industrial Corridors & Export Hubs (BICEH) Initiative'.

This multi-pronged policy aims to develop world-class infrastructure connecting major industrial centres directly to ports, airports, and logistics hubs, positioning India as a formidable global manufacturing and export powerhouse.

The initiative, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is projected to attract investments worth an astounding ₹10 lakh crore over the next seven years and is expected to generate over 5 million direct and indirect jobs.

It signifies a strategic pivot towards enhancing export competitiveness through superior logistics and integrated industrial ecosystems, building upon the foundational success of existing infrastructure drives like Bharatmala Pariyojana and PM Gati Shakti.

Speaking at a press conference, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscored the transformative potential of BICEH. “This initiative is a game-changer for India's economic landscape,” she stated. “It is not merely about building roads; it is about building a future where Indian goods can reach global markets with unprecedented speed and efficiency.

We are addressing the fundamental bottlenecks of logistics costs, infrastructure deficits, and ease of doing business, making India an irresistible destination for global and domestic manufacturers.”

The Minister revealed that the government would allocate an initial outlay of ₹2.5 lakh crore from the Union Budget over the next three years for land acquisition, common infrastructure development, and incentivizing state governments.

The remaining investment is expected to flow from private sector participation, both domestic and foreign, under various public-private partnership (PPP) models.

Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, highlighted the export-centric vision. “Our aim is to elevate India’s merchandise exports to USD 1 trillion by 2030.

The BICEH Initiative is foundational to achieving this ambitious target,” he asserted. “By significantly reducing logistics costs, which currently stand at 13-14% of our GDP, we expect to boost the competitiveness of Indian products by 5-7 percentage points.

This will make 'Make in India for the World' a tangible reality.”

The initiative will focus on high-growth sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, automotive, and renewable energy equipment.

Special incentives, including relaxed regulatory frameworks, single-window clearances, and skill development programmes, will be offered within the new manufacturing clusters to attract anchor units.

Economists predict that the initiative could boost India's manufacturing sector's share in GDP from the current 17% to over 22% by 2030.

The creation of new industrial corridors and export hubs is also expected to foster balanced regional development, bringing economic opportunities to hitherto underserved areas.

Detailed project reports for the 10 identified corridors and 35 manufacturing/logistics parks are expected to be finalized within the next six months.

The government plans to fast-track land acquisition processes, leveraging digital tools and working closely with state governments to minimize delays.

Tenders for the first phase of infrastructure development and the establishment of initial manufacturing clusters are anticipated to be floated by early next year.
